Department of Foreign Affairs grant

Based on local community work and Katrina’s professional media background, the Department of Foreign Affairs awarded Sudden OnSet a small grant. It is part of the Communicating Europe Initiative. A limited series podcast about Ireland and the EU, with a particular focus on marginalised voices, is currently in production. The funds have been allocated to purchasing recording equipment, software and hosting subscriptions, and to compensating interviewees for their time and emotional labour.

The title of the podcast is Free Movement. The format is based on the structure of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. The titles of the charter – dignity, freedoms, equality, solidarity, citizens’ rights, justice – will be the titles and respective subjects of the six episodes.

As of February 2020, the primary recording is complete and the audio files are currently being edited. Interviewees include a representative of the EU Ombudsman office, a university lecturer, Irish citizens, immigrants, members of the LGBTQIA community, disability activists, and primary and secondary school students. Recording was carried out at Grafitti Theatre, University College Cork, and in private residences. Additional editing support is being provided by St. John’s Central College in Cork.
